Glen,
Your question confuses me also. Your vacuum should only be an issue at idle if you are running a monster cam. After you are off idle there should be no problem.
People have been running huge cams and automatics on the street forever. Shift patterns are certainly not like a Cadillac but should still work fine.
If the car has an acceptable idle and engine performance sounds more like you have a tranny issue. you also need to make sure you are pulling your vacuum from below the carb butterflys not above, this will give you peak vacuum and it will drop when the throttle is mashed as intended.
Try hooking up a vacuum gauge on a long hose and bring it through the window and check vacuum going down the road, that is where it really counts.
